I switched from MAME to the Mame32 app, and it seems to be running the ROMs much better.

No, net yet, but I think I'm getting closer. So the black screens are a thing of the past! Now I just need to apply those keys to a button combo on the Tankstick. I was able to successfully apply Esc-1 mappings to exit a game in progress. I'm starting to think that this may not be possible. I want the system to work without any need for the keyboard while Maximus is launched. The 'OK' (joystick left/right) combo has never EVER worked for me. I'm not sure how to do that yet, I hope it's not too difficult. I also think that I'll need to manually map some keys to the joystick and buttons on the Tankstick. Now everything is set back to normal, but it still does not work. So I reinstalled Mame, replacing the xarcade.cfg file with the original. But I was not able to try it because I somehow managed to corrupt my xarcade.cfg file when I was attempting to implement the Esc-Player 1 concept you posted.
